The Restoration Process in a Nutshell

As you browse the galleries, you will see that some images have undergone what seems to be a lot of restoration, while others look like they could use some work. It all depends on what I have as raw product to start with. I will be the first to admit that some don't come out as good as others. Frankly, there are a few images that I personally wouldn't buy, but I have posted them anyway because their content has historical value. Additionally, I have found that different clients have different expectations. Many want the "weathered" look.

You will notice that I have digitally colorized some images. I felt that the viewer might like to see what the Watch Hill looked like in reality at the turn of the century. The view from the top of the lighthouse took a zillion hours to do, but it came out quite realistically, I think. Take a look!

LET'S GET INTERACTIVE!!!

The image below is the earliest photograph of Watch Hill on record. It was taken during the early 1870's, and shows the only three hotels of the day. The Ocean House (built 1868) is on the left, The Atlantic House (built 1856) is in the middle, and the original Watch Hill House (built 1835) is at the upper right. There is a large dilapidated barn or boat shed just down the hill from the Ocean House. Upon its foundation would soon be built the Narragansett House. For additional historical data, please go to the Historical Articles section.

The original (which I own), is only 1-1/2 inches across. As you can seen, a corner is missing, the edges are ragged, and it is covered with stains.

I have empowered your cursor right now with the magical ability to instantly restore this image, so that you will be standing somewhere out near the Beach Club on a sunny day back when Ulysses S. Grant may very well be lounging about at the Spring House on Block Island. Go ahead....move your cursor over the image and click.......

I only wish it were that easy!

Now, you can proceed to my page of Upcoming Attractions, or return to the Galleries for more browsing.

Enjoy!
